Clay figurines of two boys in traditional Chinese clothing with wary expressions

Clay Figure Zhang: A beloved folk art from Tianjin

Pearl River Mart has a wide range of cultural figurines, including Buddhas, Goddesses of Mercy, and of course lucky cats. But these charming clay ones are extra special.

Known as Clay Figure Zhang, the auspicious figurines come from Tianjin, China. The folk art was created by scholar and artist Zhang Mingshan during the Daoguang reign (1821–1850) of the Qing dynasty. While Mr. Zhang was accomplished in literary works, paintings, and calligraphy, he is most known for these clay figurines.

Each has its own personality and often symbolize different aspects of good fortune. Here's what some of the figurines mean:

  • The girl in the pink gown holds a ruyi, a kind of wishing stick. Ruyi translated from Chinese as "may all your wishes come true."
  • The wine jar the pigtailed boy in lavender and orange holds symbolizes a good life.
  • The little man with gold piled on his back is believed to attract wealth.
  • The two baby boys covering the ears (presumably from loud Lunar New Year fireworks) and symbolize wealth, happiness, and longevity in the coming year.
  • The pigtailed boy in blue and pink with the gold jar represents prosperity.
  • The monk stands for serenity, wisdom, and positive energy.

The figurines are available at our Soho store and our website.
